Lungi Ngidi out of action for rest of 2024 due to groin injury

As a result, the South Africa pacer will miss the incoming tours of Sri Lanka and Pakistan

South Africa pacer Lungi Ngidi has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka at home and also the all-format tour of the incoming Pakistan side due to a groin injury, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on November 14 (Thursday). He is expected to be in action only in January 2025.

He last played for the Proteas in a One-Day International (ODI) against Ireland in Abu Dhabi last month.

"The 28-year-old recently underwent a medical assessment as part of his structured conditioning period, during which scans revealed bilateral proximal adductor tendinopathy. He will now begin a rehabilitation programme and is expected to return to play in January," the CSA said in a statement.

Test captain Temba Bavuma is making steady progress as he continues to recover from an elbow injury that kept him out of the series against Bangladesh.

"Bavuma will undergo a fitness test on Monday, 18 November, to determine his availability for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, which starts in Durban on 27 November," the release further added.

South Africa are well poised to make the World Test Championship (WTC) final, especially after completing a 2-0 whitewash over Bangladesh.

To qualify for the summit clash at Lord's, South Africa must win all four of its remaining Tests — two against Pakistan and two against Sri Lanka — all at home.
