Heading into the third day of the Wankhede Test against New Zealand on November 3 (Sunday), not once in their history had team India endured a whitewash in a home series of three games or more.
But the team sunk to an all-time low. Chasing 147, they were bundled out for 121, and New Zealand became the first team in history to complete a 3-0 whitewash in India.
It was an abject batting performance from the hosts, who slumped to 29/5 with none of the top four managing to pass the 12-run mark. Rishabh Pant's brilliance gave them a glimmer of hope, but the visitors finally held their nerve to complete the victory and the whitewash.
On the back of the humiliation, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar took to X to share his thoughts and wrote that ‘losing 3-0 at home calls for introspection’.
“Losing 3-0 at home is a tough pill to swallow, and it calls for introspection,” Sachin wrote on X.
“Was it lack of preparation, was it poor shot selection, or was it lack of match practice?.”
At the same time, the former India skipper praised the performances of youngsters Shubman Gill and Pant. While Gill scored a sizzling 90 in the first innings, Pant almost took India over the line on day three.
“@ShubmanGill showed resilience in the first innings, and @RishabhPant17 was brilliant in both innings— his footwork made a challenging surface look like a different one altogether. He was simply superb,” Sachin wrote.
The 51-year-old credited the Kiwis for their stunning showing. Notably, this is the Kiwis’ first-ever series win away in India.
“Full credit to New Zealand for their consistent performance throughout the series. Winning 3-0 in India is as good a result as it can get.”
