Sri Lanka batter Lahiru Thirimanne has announced his retirement from international cricket. The southpaw took to social media to make the announcement. He has played 44 Tests, 26 T20Is and 127 ODIs for Sri Lanka. He last represented his country in a Test match against India in Bangalore last year.

"Absolute honor to have the opportunity to represent the country. Thanks a lot for the 13 years of amazing memories and well wishes throughout my journey. See you on the other side," Thirimanne wrote on Social media.

Thirimanne made his international debut in 2010 against India in Mirpur and in the next two years, he went on to play ODIs and T20Is as well. He also stepped in to lead the side on five occasions in ODIs between 2015 and 2019. Overall, he has scored over 5,000 runs for Sri Lanka across formats, scoring seven hundreds and 31 fifties.

“It has been an absolute honour to represent my country for the past few years. This game that has given me so much over the years. But with a lot of mixed feelings, I am here to announce my retirement from international cricket with immediate effect," Thirimanne said in a statement.

“As a player, I have given my best, I have tried my best, I have respected the game and I have done my duty honestly and ethically to my motherland. It was a difficult decision to make, but I cannot mention here the many unexpected reasons that influenced me to take this decision willingly or unwillingly."

“I take this opportunity to thank the SLC members, my coaches, teammates, physios, trainers and analysts for their support and encouragement," he further added.

“And my fans, supporters, and journalists for all the love, support and motivation you have given me over these years. I am forever grateful to you all. Thank you to all of you who have supported me behind the scenes throughout my career."

Thirimanne played three T20 World Cups for Sri Lanka, winning the tournament in 2014. He was the top-scorer in the semi-final against West Indies, scoring 44 off 35 deliveries as his side went on to win the game by 27 runs. He also played in the 2015 and 2019 World Cups in Australia and England respectively.
