Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to be retained ahead of the Indian Premier League 2025 auction, Cricbuzz reported on October 30 (Wednesday). The portal reported that Iyer proved to be “a tough negotiator in discussions with the team's management” and is now likely to enter the mega auction.
“It is now certain that he will not be on KKR's retention list, which will be submitted to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday evening. It's understood that Iyer was seeking an exorbitant fee,” reported Cricbuzz.
IPL 2025 Retention Updates: Virat Kohli to captain RCB in IPL 2025?
The Knight Riders bought Iyer for INR 12.25 crore ahead of the 2022 season. The right-handed batter slammed 401 runs in 14 innings at an average of 30.85 and a strike rate of 134.6 during the 2022 edition but missed the next season due to a back injury.
Iyer made his return in 2024 and led Kolkata to their first IPL title in 10 years. The 29-year-old hit 351 runs at an average of 39 and a strike rate of 146.9.
If Iyer does end up in the auction, he will be in great demand, considering most franchises prefer having an Indian captain. The batter has already been approached by a couple of franchises.
