Kathryn Bryce becomes the third hat-trick taker in Women’s Hundred

The Scottish allrounder also plays for the Gujarat Giants in the Women’s Premier League

Scotland skipper and ace allrounder Kathryn Bryce picked up figures of 5/13 against the Northern Superchargers, which included only the third hat-trick in the history of Women’s Hundred. Before her, only Alana King and Shabnim Ismail had managed to pick up hat-tricks in the competition.

It’s also worth mentioning that 5/13 is the second-best bowling spell in the history of Women’s Hundred, with only Fi Morris’s 5/7 being better than Bryce’s numbers. No other players have taken a fifer in the competition yet.

Batting first, Bryce’s team — The Manchester Originals — got off to a flying start as openers Beth Mooney and Laura Wolvaardt (26) batted quite well. Mooney, especially, was quite brilliant on the day, scoring 99 runs off just 54 balls - the second-highest individual score in the competition’s history. Only Tammy Beaumont has scored a century in the Women’s Hundred.

The contributions from the openers allowed the Originals to score 151/3 at the end of their innings. Kim Garth and Bryce were on the money for the Superchargers with the ball. While Garth dismissed opener Davina Perrin, Bryce got Hollie Armitage caught while chasing a full delivery as pressure started mounting on the Originals in a high-scoring chase.

Bryce then got dangerous Annabel Sutherland (26) caught by Eve Jones on the 80th delivery of the Originals’ chase. In the meantime, Garth had already dismissed Phoebe Litchfield (45), and Bryce cleaned up the remaining hopes of success by getting a hat-trick.

After she dismissed Sutherland on the last ball of her previous set of fives, Bryce came back and dismissed Alice Davidson-Richards and Kate Cross on consecutive deliveries to complete her hat-trick and become only the third woman in the history of Women’s Hundred to achieve this rare feat.

Bryce, remarkably, also picked Georgia Wareham (25) a ball later in that same set, and earned herself a fifer. Due to her efforts, the Originals could score only 134/8 in their hundred deliveries and lost the game by 17 runs.
