Justin Langer hints at taking up India's head coach role

The BCCI invited applications for India Senior Men’s coach as the tenure of current head coach Rahul Dravid is getting over next month after the T20 World Cup

Former Australian opener and head coach Justin Langer has raised speculation about his candidature for India Senior Men’s head coach position.

When asked about the recently open applications for the coveted role by The Times of India, Langer apparently smiled and took a long pause before saying that he was “curious” about the job.

“Well, I am curious. I've never ever thought about it,” Langer said.

Justin Langer was appointed as Australia’s coach during the tumultuous period after the Sandpaper Gate in 2018, and he held on to the role until 2022. During his tenure, Australia won the 2021 T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Hence, while Langer expressed his curiosity, his experience of handling the pressure of an international coach helped him understand the enormity of the job.

“I have deep respect for any international coach because I understand the pressure, but coaching the Indian team would be an extraordinary role,” the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) head coach said.

Despite that, Langer felt fascinated by the opportunity of working with the variety of talent that would be at his disposal if he became the India Men’s head coach. At LSG itself, he has a wide range of youngsters to train, including the likes of Arshin Kulkarni, Ayush Badoni and the speedster Mayank Yadav.

From what I've seen with the amount of talent I've seen in this country, it would be fascinating,” Langer said in an interview with The Times of India.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) invited applications for the post of India's Senior Men’s coach as the tenure of current head coach Rahul Dravid is getting over next month after the T20 World Cup. The next head coach will get a tenure of 3.5 years when selected, which will last up to the end of 2027.
