India have been dealt a body blow in the ongoing fifth Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) as stand-in captain and talisman Jasprit Bumrah has been sent to the hospital for scans. Exact details of the injury remain unknown, but the 31-year-old left the field after bowling one over after the lunch interval.
Bumrah trudged off the field after bowling the 31st over of Australia’s first innings, his 10th, but never returned. Live visuals later showed the Indian skipper leaving the SCG in a van. Mark Nicholas then confirmed on air that Bumrah had been sent for scans.
The Bumrah injury came at a very unfortunate time for India, with the game and the series in the balance. Australia trailed the visitors by 74 runs when the Indian skipper left the field. After that, Australia lost the wickets of Alex Carey and Pat Cummins but were able to cut down the deficit significantly thanks to a maiden Test fifty on debut from Beau Webster.
In Bumrah’s absence, it is Virat Kohli who has taken charge as captain of the Indian side.
Incumbent Test captain Rohit Sharma is not playing this game, having voluntarily ‘stood down’ due to poor form. Rohit confirmed during the lunch break today, however, that he has no plans of retiring from Tests anytime soon.
Nine innings into this series, only Pat Cummins (152.0) has bowled more overs than Bumrah (151.2). He is, by some distance, the highest wicket-taker in the series (32) and, earlier today, set a new record for the most wickets taken by an Indian bowler in a Test series in Australia.
