James Anderson to have street named after him in Burnley

Anderson played for Burnley Cricket Club briefly before moving on to play for Lancashire and then England

England’s James Anderson, who bid goodbye to international cricket at Lord’s last week, is set to have a street named after him in Burnley as authorities in the town are considering the steps they could take to honour the legendary pacer in their hometown.

The Burnley Council is believed to have already moved forward with plans to name a street after Anderson, who hung up his boots last week as the most successful pacer in the history of Test cricket.

Not just that, the authority’s recreation boss Cllr Jack Launer even suggested naming a stand at Burnley FC’s Turf Moor ground after Anderson, who is also a boyhood Burnley FC supporter.

“I would like to put on record my thanks to Jimmy Anderson,” lancs.live quoted Cllr Launer as saying.

“What a career. I don’t know what we’re going to do in Burnley to honour him and I hope he comes back and teaches our kids how to bowl.

“I hope we do more than name a street after him.

“I hope we name a stand at Turf Moor potentially after him – or name a cricket field stand.”

Borough (district) leader Cllr Afrasiab Anwar confirmed that the process of naming a street after Anderson has already begun.

“Some time ago there was a decision made that we would do something to recognise the achievements of Jimmy Anderson,” Cllr Anwar said.

“We’re in the process of naming a street after him.

“I think the reason for that delay was that he was still playing.

“Shortly we will be able to make an announcement but it is recognised that he has achieved and that also he has made Burnley proud.”

Anderson played for Burnley Cricket Club briefly before moving on to play for Lancashire and then England.

The 41-year-old, despite retiring, is still with the England team for the ongoing Test series against West Indies, albeit as a bowling consultant.
