Jake Fraser-McGurk becomes first Aussie 'batter' to register a duck on T20I debut

Fraser-McGurk, who took strike in the second innings, lasted only three balls as he miscued a pull shot straight to Charlie Cassell at mid-on

On September 4 (Wednesday), Jake Fraser-McGurk became the 110th player to represent Australia in T20Is. There was a lot of excitement surrounding the debut of the 22-year-old, who had made heads turn earlier in the year in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL), where he scored 330 runs at an absurd strike rate of 234.04 for the Delhi Capitals (DC).

As it turned out, though, the youngster ended up enduring a debut to forget as he became the first Australian top six batter in history to register a duck on debut.

Fraser-McGurk, who took strike in the second innings, lasted only three balls as he miscued a pull shot straight to Charlie Cassell at mid-on to depart for a three-ball duck.

As a result, the 22-year-old became the first Aussie top six batter and the third Australian player overall to register a duck on debut. The other two to have been dismissed for a duck on T20I debut for Australia are Ashley Noffke (2007) and Jhye Richardson (2017). Noffke famously got dismissed for a diamond duck back in 2007, against New Zealand in Perth.

The duck extended the horror run for Fraser-McGurk in T20s. He represented the San Francisco Unicorns in the 2024 Major League Cricket (MLC) and averaged 11.57 in seven innings, not crossing the 20-run mark even once.

Fraser-McGurk was a reserve in Australia's T20 World Cup 2024 squad. He is replacing the retired David Warner in Australia's T20I side.
