Yashasvi Jaiswal began the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a duck, but he roared back with a stunning 161 in the second innings of the Test. But in Jaiswal’s 297-ball stay in the second dig, something very interesting happened as he sledged Mitchell Starc, whom he’d taken apart in that particular innings, scoring 51 runs off 69 balls, including hitting a six.
Jaiswal, during his 161 in the third innings, was overheard saying to Starc, ‘You’re too slow’.
Starc did not retaliate verbally in Perth, but he got his revenge with the ball in Adelaide as on the very first ball of the second Test, the left-armer trapped Jaiswal LBW for a golden duck. It was the Rory Burns dismissal from the Gabba Test in the 2021/22 Ashes all over again: the left-handed batter moved too far across, and Starc embarrassed him with a full one that swung away late.
The umpire raised his finger in an instant, and Jaiswal did not even bother going up. It proved to be a wise decision, as ball-tracking showed three reds.

It was only the third instance of Starc taking a wicket on the first ball of a Test match. Burns was one of the other two instances and the first ever instance was him dismissing Dimuth Karunaratne on the very first ball in a Test match in Galle in 2016. Incidentally, all three of them were left-handers, who got out first ball against Starc.
After getting hammered in the Perth Test, Starc’s first ball was the best imaginable start for the hosts in the second game.
