Irani Cup: Prithvi Shaw hits 37-ball fifty for Mumbai

However, while Shaw sizzled at one end, Mumbai kept losing wickets at the other

After a disappointing showing in the first innings, where he nicked to slip for just four runs, Prithvi Shaw made amends in the second innings of the Irani Cup as he smashed a 37-ball fifty.

Opening the batting, Shaw entered the second innings with Mumbai boasting a 121-run first innings lead. With his side already on the front foot in the game, the 24-year-old wasted no time in taking the attack to the Rest of India bowlers, smashing eight fours en route a rapid fifty. Three of those eight fours came in consecutive deliveries, in the fifth over bowled by Mukesh Kumar.

However, while Shaw was sizzling at one end, Mumbai kept losing wickets at the other. Outside Shaw, all of Mumbai’s top five batters, including Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane, fell cheaply. Hardik Tamore, Rahane and Iyer all in fact departed for single-digit scores.

The game situation hence forced Shaw to slow down after his fifty. The 24-year-old struck at 135.1 till he got to his fifty but, post the landmark, scored just 26 runs off the 68 balls he faced, going at 38.2. He eventually departed for 76 off 105 balls, bowled by Saransh Jain.

At the time of writing this, Mumbai lead Rest of India by 250 runs with four wickets in hand. Mumbai are aiming to win their first Irani Cup this century, with their previous triumph in the competition coming back in the 1997/98 season.
