It was a homecoming for Ravichandran Ashwin at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Ashwin was signed by his first IPL franchise, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for INR 9.75 Cr.
Ashwin started his IPL career with CSK in 2009 and played seven seasons in a row until 2015. Since then the off-spinner has played for the defunct Pune franchise, Punjab Kings (PBKS), whom he captained as well, Delhi Capitals (DC) and Rajasthan Royals (RR).
At CSK, Ashwin will join hands with Ravindra Jadeja, his long time spin-bowling partner at the Indian team, especially in Test cricket where they have scripted many wins at home.
The duo played 58 matches for CSK together between 2013 and 2015 before Ashwin left. Jadeja, who stayed with CSK has been a constant figure for CSK ever since joining the side ahead of the 2013 season.
CSK were keen on getting Ashwin back. They were the first bidders for the Chennai-born at his base price of INR 2 Cr and fought with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) until 3.4 Cr. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) then joined it for a couple of bids but soon made way for RR in the competition. CSK eventually won the bidding war at 9.75 Cr.
Ashwin was a big success for RR in his previous stint, picking 35 wickets in 44 innings at an economy of 7.8. He also chipped in as a batter many times, notching up his only IPL half-century.
