Duleep Trophy: Ruturaj Gaikwad retires hurt after twisting ankle

The Chennai Super Kings and Maharashtra player was opening the batting for India C against India B at Anantapur in the second round of the Duleep Trophy

Ruturaj Gaikwad, the India C skipper, retired hurt on a score of four runs soon after beginning to bat in the second round of the Duleep Trophy 2024

Gaikwad was in very good touch and scored a 48-ball 46 against India D in the second innings of the first-round game of the competition at Anantapur. While he scored only five in the first innings, his impactful start was crucial in his team winning a close game by four wickets.

He also began the second game on a positive note, scoring a boundary on his first ball against pacer Mukesh Kumar after being put into bat by India B. Madhya Pradesh batter Rajat Patidar replaced him at the crease and joined Sai Sudharsan at the crease.

The cause of the injury is not yet sure, however, it is being speculated that the opening batter twisted his ankle. It’s notable that there is no live streaming or telecast of the game between India B and C at the Rural Development Trust Stadium ‘B’ in Anantapur.

However, the game between India A and D is being shown live and also has DRS available, which the ‘B’ ground lacks.

If this injury turns out to be a serious one, it could be yet another unfortunate instance in Gaikwad’s start-stop red ball career. He was earlier ruled out of the South Africa Test tour after he injured his ring finger, and is yet to make a comeback in the Test side.

He averages 42.69 in first-class cricket, with 2092 runs in 51 innings to his name.
