India could announce new captain for Zimbabwe T20Is: Report

Those part of the T20 World Cup 2024 are likely to be rested following a busy period

India and Zimbabwe will battle it out in the T20 International (T20I) series right after the ongoing T20 World Cup. The five T20Is will be played in Harare from July 6 onwards and will reach its conclusion on July 14. According to a report on CricketNext, we will see plenty of new faces in the squad, and in all likeliness, a new captain could be named if the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are given a rest.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is scheduled to meet later today (June 23) to determine the squad. Given that regular members have had a busy period that has seen them take part in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and the T20 World Cup, a period of rest for such players is a possibility.

According to CricketNext, "BCCI has already collected the passports of a few players who will be flying to Zimbabwe for the series."

India have Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, and Avesh Khan as part of the reserves and they could very well be on their way to Zimbabwe. Sanju Samson and Yuzvendra Chahal, who are part of the 15-member squad, and are yet to get a game in the tournament could also feature in the bilateral series.

India have not toured Zimbabwe for a T20I series since 2016, when they won 2-1. However, they did travel in 2022 for a One-Day (ODI) series under Shikhar Dhawan, winning the three-match series 3-0.

In the T20 World Cup, India are one of two sides, other than South Africa, who are on an unbeaten run. Another win over Australia on June 24 (Monday) will assure them of a place in the semi-final.
