IND W vs WI W: Despite convincing win, India's fielding woes continue

Since January 2024, India have dropped 36 catches, the most for any side in this period

India women continued their poor run of form in the field as they dropped three sitters in the first T20I of the three-match series against West Indies on December 15 (Sunday) at the Dr DY Patil Sports University Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Though the Indian team managed to win the game convincingly by 49 runs, their fielding remained a cause of concern.

While Minu Mani started the proceedings with a sensational catch to send the West Indian skipper Hayley Mathews packing in the second over, it was only dropped catches that dotted Indian fielders’ presence in the game thereafter.

Qiana Joseph was put down by Sajana Sajeevan in the 8th over off the bowling of Saima Thakor. Just before that dropped chance, Radha Yadav had put in a brilliant effort to try and catch a ball dying on her.

Jemimah Rodrigues, considered to be one of the best fielders in the country, dropped Deandra Dottin in the 14th over which was a sitter.

Dottin was dropped again and in the very next over once again by one of the better fielders, Smriti Mandhana. In the 20th over, Mandy Mangaru was found short of her crease, but Saima Thakor had failed to gather the throw well.

Similar was the case in the third over, where Joseph could have been run-out at both ends but ended up being not out.

Since January 2024, India have dropped 36 catches, the most for any side in this period. Out of 23 attempts at run-out in the same period, India could effectively run out only on 11 occasions.

Most catches dropped in WT20Is in 2024

36 - India Women

34 - England Women

33 - New Zealand Women

29 - Bangladesh Women

The team would wish to fix this across the next two games of the series. The second T20I will be played on December 17 (Tuesday) at the same venue.
