With a nervy nine-run loss at the hands of defending champions Australia, India no longer have control over their qualification to the semi-final stage of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. After Australia qualified, owing to a superior net run rate, the focus was on India to see if they could follow suit with a clinical run chase against Tahlia McGrath and co.
However, India lost control of the run chase and eventually lost the clash by nine runs, which now makes New Zealand’s last encounter against Pakistan the decider.
The equation is quite simple for India: New Zealand should lose.
The equation for New Zealand is that they have to beat Pakistan (by whatever margin) because that will take them to six points. With courtesy of an extra win, they will any which way qualify for the semi-final stage of the competition.
But the real mathematical challenge will be for Pakistan and their fans. With their staggering loss against both India and Australia, they now have to fight the law of maths. If they bat first against New Zealand, they must ensure that they win by a margin of around the 50-run margin, which will then propel their net run-rate over India and New Zealand.
However, if they bat second, they will have to chase down the total in under 11 overs to give themselves a chance of reaching the next stage. If neither of the two above situations happens, then either India or New Zealand will make it to the next stage.
