Just one game into the long Ranji Trophy season, Delhi have replaced their skipper, Yash Dhull, with the veteran Himmat Singh, who will now lead the team for the remainder of the competition. Delhi lost their first season clash against Puducherry in front of their home fans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, which led to the change in captaincy.
Himmat, who has played 22 First-Class games for the state, has been appointed as the skipper, starting with the away clash against Jammu and Kashmir on January 12.
"Yash is a talented player but is out of form. We wanted him to do well as a batter, that is why we have relieved him of captaincy duties. Himmat is our senior player and has done very well for us. He will captain the side," Delhi and District Cricket Association joint secretary Rajan Manchanda told PTI.
Dhull only scored 2 and 23 in the two innings, where Delhi folded out for a paltry score of 148 and 145 in the clash.
The 21-year-old was made the team’s captain in December 2022, with the right-hander scoring a century in only his first game as a skipper. Dhull’s numbers - 1185 runs @43.88 in 17 clashes are quite impressive, but his form started tapering last season, where he only averaged 27.
Delhi’s last title-winning season in the red-ball format was way back in 2007/08, after which they haven’t yet reached that height of excellence.
