Gujarat's Urvil Patel smashes second-fastest ton in T20 history

After going unsold at the IPL auction, the Gujarat batter smashed a 28-ball ton against Tripura

Days after going unsold at the 2025 IPL mega auction, Gujarat’s Urvil Patel caused havoc with a 28-ball ton against Tripura in the ongoing round of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024 on November 27. It is the second-fastest ton in the history of T20 cricket and the fastest ton in any format by an Indian, bettering the 32-ball 100 from Rishabh Pant.

The wicketkeeper batter, who was earlier part of the Gujarat Titans setup, took only 15 balls to get to his half-century and continued that aggression to get to his century. In his first 17 balls at the crease, the Gujarat batter smashed five fours and cleared the boundary six times.

En route to his century, Urvil upped the ante, smashing the next 50 runs in just 13 balls, where he smashed five more sixes and two fours, putting Tripura under immense pressure at the Emerald Heights International School Ground, Indore. The opening partnership between Aarya Desai (38) and Urvil (108) was 150 runs, and it came off just 55 balls, with Gujarat chasing down 156 in just 10.2 overs, thanks to Urvil's staggering 35-ball 113.

Only Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan (27 balls) has scored a century at a quicker pace than Urvil in the history of the format. Last year, Urvil cracked the second-fastest List A ton by an Indian on the very same date, where he hit it in 41 deliveries.
