Good opportunity to get 300th wicket: Jadeja sets eyes on unique double

With four more wickets, Jadeja would join the likes of Warne, Ashwin, and Vettori as spinners to complete a double of 3000 runs and 300 Test wickets

India’s ace all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has set his sights on an approaching milestone as he is just four wickets away from reaching 300 Test wickets. Jadeja, who took two wickets in Bangladesh’s first innings of the first Test in Chennai on September 20, missed out on a century after getting out for 86.

“I got out today but it's part and parcel of the game,” Jadeja said in an interview with the broadcasters at the end of Day 2. “I am very happy with my bowling, the way I went through today. It's a good opportunity to take the 300th wicket on this ground,” added the 35-year-old.

While Bangladeshi batting did not present a lot of challenges, the only partnership of more than 50 runs came between Litton Das and Shakib Al Hasan. Both the wickets were taken by Jadeja only, and both came while batters were trying to sweep them out of the pressure created by tight lengths and tactical field placements.

Talking about the team’s plans for Day 3, Jadeja said, “First we have to bat very well, we have to put somewhere around 120-150 from hereon. We'll be in a good position and then we'll come out and bowl and try and get them out as early as possible.”

India were 81/3 at the end of Day 2 and had already led the Bangladesh side by 308 runs. Jadeja feels that the wicket is still good for batting, and hence, if India put up a huge total, they could then try to get the victory as soon as possible.

“It's pretty good for batting. There is something in the wicket for the fast bowler and spinners also, odd spin and odd ball is keeping low. All the five bowlers will be in play,” he added.

If Jadeja does manage to get four wickets in the Bangladesh second innings, he will join the likes of Shane Warne, Ravichandran Ashwin and Daniel Vettori as only the fourth spinner to complete a double of 3000 runs and 300 Test wickets.
