Chances are that Georgia Voll wouldn’t have made her debut for Australia had skipper and opening batter Alyssa Healy not injured her planta fascia in her right foot. However, the 21-year-old made the most of the opportunity she got against India by hitting 147 runs in the first two innings, which included a blistering 101 off 87 balls. As a result, she has now been rewarded with a selection for the upcoming three ODI tour to New Zealand.
Voll impressed the seniors in the side not only with her run-scoring but also with the ease and consistency with which she has been scoring those runs. She made full use of her good form in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), where she was the fifth-highest scorer with 330 runs in 12 games at a strike rate of 144.73, and broke down the doors for selection in the Australian senior women’s team.
“She's just really unflappable, and just seems to take every opportunity in her stride," Ellyse Perry told the media after the second game where Australia clinically outbatted India.
"I think that's all you can ask of any player, is to continue to push everyone around them and play the best they can and make the most of any opportunity they get.
"If they are able to seize that, rewards come, whether it's straight away or down the track. In Georgia's case, she's firmly put herself in the mind of the team and selectors going forward, that's for sure."
Skipper Healy will also make her return to the side for the three ODIs in New Zealand. She’s recovering from surgery and is currently on the sidelines of the ODI series against India.
