South Africa’s Gary Kirsten’s stint as Pakistan’s white-ball coach seems to have come to a rather abrupt end, as there is no clarity over whether he would travel to Australia with the white-ball set-up or not. The press release by the PCB, which announced the squad for the Australia and Zimbabwe tours, said that Kirsten will join the white-ball squad in Australia on October 28.
However, on October 28 (Monday), various media reports, citing internal sources, claimed that the former Proteas player and World Cup-winning coach of India had quit, and a public statement would be issued later on.
It was only on October 27 (Sunday) that Pakistan announced a white-ball skipper in Mohammad Rizwan, and now they would have to worry about a white-ball coach even as their tour of Australia begins in a week.
According to Cricbuzz, Kirsten had requested the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to appoint David Reid as a High-Performance coach, but his request was not accepted.
Since Kirsten joined Pakistan, the team lost a T20I series against England and could not make it to the Super 8s of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. This tour of Australia would have been his biggest test after the T20 World Cup, but now the Pakistani set-up might be going ahead with Jason Gillespie, their red-ball coach, to double up with the white-ball duties as well.
The other option, largely circulated in the media, is of former Pakistan pacer Aaqib Javed, who is currently serving as one of the selectors of the team.
