Virat Kohli sizzled on the big stage yet again with a match-winning century in a chase against Pakistan in the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy. That sent the Indian fans into a frenzy after winning the game against their arch-rivals.
However, videos emerged of Kohli fans celebrating his century even in Islamabad and other Pakistani cities, showing that the Indian batting star’s fandom is international and doesn’t care about borders or political situations between countries.
While it can be perplexing for some, former Pakistani pacer Mohammad Amir feels that it’s because Kohli is a complete package of an athlete, a role model both on and off the field, similar to Ronaldo and Messi in football.
“Why do people love Ronaldo? Why do they love Messi?” Amir said on Sports Tak.
“If I talk about Ronaldo, especially, look at his lifestyle. Look at his charity work, his work ethic, and his fitness. He is a complete package.
“Likewise, Virat Kohli is a complete package. Why is he a role model for many, even in Pakistan? The country doesn't matter. Whether he is from Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, or England - a role model can be from anywhere. For this generation, Virat Kohli is an inspiration.”
The former pacer, who blew away the Indian top order in the final of the Champions Trophy in 2017 and helped Pakistan win the trophy, advised the youngsters to make Kohli their role model.
“All those youngsters who want to be cricketers, who want to be batters, should follow Virat Kohli's footsteps,” Amir said.
