Former New Zealand batter George Worker announces retirement from cricket

The 34-year-old made the decision so that he could work at an investment services firm

Former New Zealand batter George Worker has announced his retirement from professional cricket to work at an investment services firm. The 34-year-old played 10 ODIs and two T20Is for the Black Caps, with his last international appearance coming in 2018.

"After a fulfilling 17-year journey in professional cricket, I am announcing my retirement from the sport," said Worker, who started his career with Central Districts and ended it with Auckland.

“This decision marks the end of an incredible chapter of my life and the beginning of a new adventure. Throughout the course of my career, I've forged some great friendships that will last a lifetime and memories I will cherish forever.

"As I close this chapter, I am excited to embark on the next phase of my life with Forsyth Barr, who have offered me a fantastic opportunity. I look forward to bringing the same passion and dedication to my new role with them."

The left-handed batter scored 272 runs in ODIs at an average of 34 and 90 runs in two T20Is at a strike rate of 140.62, including a 38-ball 62 against Zimbabwe on debut.

Overall, Worker amassed 6,400 in 126 first-class games, 6,721 runs @ 43.64 in 169 List A encounters and 3,480 runs in 154 T20s.

"Whilst his immense leadership and experience will be sorely missed in the Aces' environment, we're hugely excited for him as he embarks on this next chapter in his career," said Auckland Cricket's head of performance and talent, Evan Jones.

"George will, of course, remain an important part of the Auckland Cricket family, and we look forward to seeing what that may look like in the future."
