It’s history for Fazalhaq Farooqi as the left-armer has broken the record for the most wickets taken in a single T20 World Cup edition (17).
Heading into the semi-final against South Africa on June 26 (Wednesday), Farooqi was level with Wanindu Hasaranga for the most wickets taken in a T20WC edition, with 16 scalps to his name.
The 23-year-old went to the top of the ladder when he castled Quinton de Kock with a vicious inswinger on his 11th ball of the night. Full and swinging in, de Kock looked to slog the ball through the on-side for a boundary. But Farooqi’s inswinger went right through the left-hander’s gate to help the Afghanistan speedster script history.
It’s truly been an all-timer campaign from Farooqi. Apart from breaking the record for the most wickets taken in a single T20WC edition, he’s also set a new record for the most 3+ wicket hauls in a T20WC campaign.
In the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup, Farooqi has picked four 3+ wicket hauls — against India, New Zealand, Uganda and PNG. It’s a feat no other bowler has managed to achieve in the competition’s 17-year history.
He’s also taken 10 wickets in the powerplay, the joint-most for a bowler in a T20WC edition. The only other bowler to take 10+ wickets in the powerplay in a T20WC edition is Dirk Nannes, back in 2010, representing Australia.
