In what comes as a significant blow for England, leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed has left India and flown back home due to a personal emergency and will not return for the fifth Test in Dharamshala. The 19-year-old played each of the first three Tests of the series but was left out of the starting XI for the fourth Test in Ranchi, starting today.
It is believed that the leg-spinner only learned of the family emergency late on Thursday, after the England XI was announced.
England have confirmed that they will not be seeking a replacement for Rehan. The development essentially means that the Three Lions only have a 13-man squad currently in India, with Jack Leach already having flown back home due to a knee injury.
The series, Rehan's first ever in the subcontinent, proved to be a mixed bag for the teenager. He chipped in with valuable wickets but could only average 44.00 with the ball, while registering an economy of 4.08. His stroke-making with the bat was attractive but he only amassed 76 runs at 12.66.
