5 key highlights behind England brushing aside the USA

England became the first team in this World Cup to qualify for the semi-finals

USA’s decent start

Asked to bat first, USA started their innings in a decent manner. Despite losing Andries Gous in the first over, USA had 48/2 in the powerplay. Nitish Kumar was looking good at 24 off 16, having hit two sixes. He had the skipper Aaron Jones with him, whose form had just tapered off a bit, but he was still USA’s star batter. In short, the co-hosts could dare to aim at a decent score.

Rashid dazzles USA with his googlies

Adil Rashid has been prolific for England in terms of picking wickets and ceasing the opposition. The wily leg spinner picked 2/13 in his four overs to throw USA off their plans. He conceded only two runs in his first over and picked a wicket each in his next two overs and USA never recovered from those blows.

USA’s innings, a tale of two halves

In the first half of their innings, the USA put up 65/3. In the second half, they managed only 50 runs for seven wickets in 8.5 overs, to be eventually bowled out for 115.

Jordan’s hat trick

Chris Jordan played a big role in USA’s capitulation in the second half. He ran through their lower order in a rare over, where he snapped four wickets in five balls. Jordan dismissed Corey Anderson and wiped out the tail in the blink of an eye while also completing his hat trick. It is the third hat trick of this World Cup and the first for an England bowler. In fact, Jordan’s hat trick is the first for England in T20Is.

Buttler races England home

The Three Lions needed to chase down 116 inside 18.4 overs to ensure their qualification for the semi-finals. Jos Buttler raced them to the finish line in 9.4 overs, scoring an unbeaten 83 off only 38 balls.

In the ninth over, he carted the left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh for five sixes on the bounce. England won by 10 wickets and became the first team to qualify for the semi-final in this World Cup.
