After a groin injury cut short his CPL appearance against Saint Lucia Kings, legendary Caribbean all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, ending a career that was tailor-made for T20 cricket. The leading wicket-taker in the shortest version of the game, Bravo has earned many accolades in his career, winning two T20 World Cups and winning the IPL, PSL, and Big Bash League.
"My mind wants to keep going, but my body can no longer endure the pain, the breakdowns, and the strain," Bravo said in a post on Instagram.
"I can't put myself in a position where I might let down my teammates, my fans, or the teams I represent. So, with a heavy heart, I officially announce my retirement from the sport. Today, the Champion bids farewell."
Bravo was due to turn up for MI Emirates in the International League T20 in UAE in January, but the injury has effectively ended that chance. He will now continue as a coach.
Back home, in the Caribbean, no player could compare himself with what Bravo has achieved in the format. Five CPL titles are a testament to his incredible growth over the years, but the way he mentored many youngsters—case in point, Dominic Drakes in CPL 2021—will be remembered in CPL history.
His slower balls became folklore and a textbook on how to excel in death overs. However, with the bat, he also stuck without any give, scoring 6970 runs in T20s, which made him such a sought-after player in the T20 arena.
