Duleep Trophy: Abhimanyu Easwaran eyes title after hard-fought 157*

After a failure in the first round, the India B captain bounced back with an epic ton in the second round

Opening batter Abhimanyu Easwaran slammed a spectacular 157* against India C in the second round of the Duleep Trophy 2024. The India B captain managed just 13 and 4 in the first round against India A, but turned things around in the next round, when his team needed it the most, carrying his bat through the innings.

With runs under his belt, Easwaran now hopes to put up a better show in the next round, as he eyes the Duleep Trophy title. “This is my second match after spending 2.5 months at the National Cricket Academy due to injury, so scoring a century feels good. I’m looking forward to exceeding my performance in the next match and winning the trophy, which is our ultimate target," Easwaran said.

After India A put up a mammoth 525, Easwaran put on 129 for the first wicket with N Jagadeesan (70), but found very little support after that. As a result, he had to dig deep and bat through to help his side save the match. Easwaran said batting became more and more difficult as the innings went on.

"This was quite an important match for me and my team. With such a large target of 525 to chase, we knew the depth in our batting gave us a chance," the Bengal batter said.

"The plan was simple – if two or three of us could form solid partnerships and each score a hundred, we were confident we could reach the target. Unfortunately, our opening partnership was only 100 plus runs, and after that, it became difficult to score centuries."

Easwaran will be in action next in the third and final round of the Duleep Trophy 2024 where his side will take on India D in Anantapur. His side, India B, as things stand, are second on the table with one win and a draw with seven points.
