Maharaja T20 drama: Vyshak Vijaykumar forces umpires to call the game off

The Karnataka pacer went down thrice in the same over before the umpire’s called for a break

On August 20 (Tuesday), plenty of drama unfurled in the Maharaja T20 trophy when Gulbarga Mystics’ Vyshak Vijaykumar went down before he could release the ball during his action.

What’s so funny or dramatic about it, you may ask?

The entire incident happened after a rain break, which reduced the target for the Mangaluru Dragons from 170 to 61 in seven overs. Out of that, the Dragons had already razored off 46 runs before rain interrupted the clash.

With plenty of rain around the corner, the match was expected to be a washout before the rain slowed down. This gave hope to the Dragons, who were ahead of the asking rate. Despite multiple pleas from both Devdutt Padikkal and Vyshak, who both had lengthy chats with the match officials, the match resumed with a makeshift setup. That setup included placing a mat to cover the wet patches in the outfield.

That’s when Vyshak seemingly went down in his bowling action multiple times before the team physios came into play.

On his third attempt, the Karnataka pacer went down, holding his ankle, almost a kneejerk effect of the wet and damp areas on the landing strip. The 27-year-old held his ankle for the longest time while Padikkal chatted with the two on-field umpires.

While the umpires did everything possible to have a smooth restart, with the groundsmen pounding the area and even sprinkling sawdust, it wasn’t enough in the end as the conditions were deemed ‘unfit’.

It didn’t leave the Dragons dugout happy, who made their way onto the pitch to have a chat with the match officials while the Mystics were happily walking back to their dressing room.

Imagine being the batting team, especially when your team needed just 15 runs from 15 balls, and all you could see was that your team had to be content with splitting the points in a game that was in your pocket.
