As the deadline for the Indian Premier League (IPL) teams to announce their retention lists is nearing October 31, the buzz around MS Dhoni, India’s most decorated captain's availability for the IPL 2025 season, has picked up momentum.
In the latest development, the Jharkhand cricketer has yet to confirm his availability to his team, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the franchise's CEO, Kasi Viswanathan, was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
"We have still no confirmation from him, though we would like him to continue playing for us. Hope he will confirm before 31st [October]."
With a rule that was scrapped in 2021 and brought back again this year, just to allow all those retired in or before 2019 to be picked as uncapped players, Dhoni not being retained by CSK will be a bit shocking. As an uncapped player, the Chennai-based franchise can retain the 43-year-old for INR 4 crore.
Ahead of the 2025 mega auction, the IPL teams can retain up to six players, with the players costing them at least the following amounts:
First Player- INR 18 cr
Second Player- INR 14 cr
Third Player- INR 11 cr
Fourth Player- INR 18 cr
Fifth Player- INR 14 cr
Sixth Player, Uncapped- INR 4 cr
However, these amounts are the minimum that the franchise have to pay their players in retention, they can play over and above that as well, but the amount will eventually be deducted from their auction purse of INR 120 cr.
