Destructive Sanju Samson one of the best T20 players in the world: Kumar Sangakkara

RR begin their IPL 2022 campaign against SRH on March 29 at the MCA Stadium, Pune

Rajasthan Royals' director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara feels skipper Sanju Samson is one of the best T20 players in the world.

India captain Rohit Sharma too had previously praised Samson for his batting prowess and further added he will be needed in Australia for the T20 World Cup. Samson will be leading RR for the second year in a row this season and and the back of some impressive performances, he has also forced himself into the Indian side.

“Irrespective of him being the captain or the future of RR, he is one of the best T20 players,” Sangakkara said during the Clubhouse conversation on Red Bull Cricket.

“He is a magnificent player, destructive, match-winner, has every ability that you want in a batter. He was captain before I took over last season. I have come to know him really well and admire him.

"He’s got such a passion for RR. He started here, he values that. He is a captain who is willing to admit that he doesn’t know everything as yet and he is going to grow into it. He’s got natural leadership qualities. He’s going to get better and better."

Samson scored 484 runs at 40.33 to go with a strike-rate in excess of 136 in the 14 IPL matches last season.

Sangakkara further adds that he is the perfect candidate to lead RR this season. “He’s a simple guy, a man of few words, very grounded. He’s absolutely suited for this job and it’s made working with him so much easier and fun," the Sri Lanka legend said.

"He’s got a sense of humour as well, and it comes out once in a while. He’s got a lot of pride, he wants to win. All I can do is give him the best support to be able to be that leader he knows he can be."

RR begin their IPL 2022 campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Tuesday (March 29) at the MCA Stadium, Pune. They finished seventh on the table last season, notching up just five victories and with many newly acquired players, they will hope of a better show this season.
