Close games help us build character within the team: Keshav Maharaj

The Proteas have not lost a single game at the T20 World Cup 2024 yet but could potentially crash out if they lose to West Indies on June 23 (Sunday)

South Africa are now just one of two teams who are undefeated at the T20 World Cup 2024. They have won all close matches, and many believe that they have not been clinical enough, including against England in the last game

Spinner Keshav Maharaj believes that it is such close matches that help them build character in the team.

"I think if you look at previous World Cups, the small moments we haven't really won. And it's good to see that I think all the games have come really close, and we found a way, so it's building the character within the team," Maharaj said ahead of his side's crucial game against the West Indies.

"And I think it prepares us for obviously certain opportunities that we could get and crossing over the line in those small moments are things that we've never done before. So, it's good to see us getting into that."

Maharaj has also praised fellow left-arm spinners Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie for putting up top performances in the tournament so far.

"I think they've bowled exceptionally well in the tournament. I've watched quite a few spells of them, so obviously they're quite a dominant force as well. They've got a very strong batting lineup, but just trying to stick true to my processes and my principles," he said.

Maharaj used the wind to good effect to get a couple of vital wickets against England. He hopes to make the best of it against the West Indies as well.

"I think it was only because the wind was in my favour," Maharaj said of the England game.

"Obviously, I might have bowled slightly different at times if the wind blew the other way, but I think it allowed me from the conditions point of view to sort of toss a few up there and just try and make the play."

The West Indies clash is a crucial game for South Africa as a loss could very see them crash out of the competition. Of course, they will know what they exactly need to do to make it through to the semis given England play USA in Barbados later today.
