Chris Silverwood steps down as Sri Lanka head coach

The Englishman took over the reins in 2022 and guided the team to the Asia Cup title the same year

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced on Thursday (June 27) that Chris Silverwood has stepped down as Sri Lanka's head coach. This comes after a disappointing T20 World Cup 2024 campaign in which the team failed to make it to the Super 8s.

"Being an international coach means long periods away from loved ones. After lengthy conversations with my family and with a heavy heart, I feel it is now time for me to return home." Silverwood said, according to a press release from SLC.

"It has been a real honour for me to be part of Sri Lanka Cricket, and I will be taking away many fond memories."

Silverwood's decision comes a day after Mahela Jayawardene also resigned as Sri Lanka's consultant. Silverwood took charge of the side in April 2022 after his previous side, England, 's 0-4 Ashes debacle. Jayawardene joined him the same year on a one-year contract, which was further extended by another year.

Sri Lanka's biggest moments under Silverwood include winning the Asia Cup T20 2022 and finishing runners-up to India in the 50-over format the following year. Sri Lanka also won a bilateral One-Day International (ODI) series 3-2 at home.

At the same time, Sri Lanka did not set the stage on fire in the ODI and T20 World Cup in 2023 and 2024, respectively. In the 2023 mega event in India, Sri Lanka won just two of their nine matches, finishing ninth in a 10-team event. The following year, at the T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka were one of just two teams who played their four group-stage matches in different cities and managed to win just one of their matches to bring an end to Silverwood's era.
