Chloe Tryon calls for consistency from South Africa ahead of India T20Is

Tryon believes South Africa have done well in patches but have failed to play good cricket for long periods

South Africa are 0-4 down in their ongoing tour of India, following getting whitewashed in the ODIs and losing the one-off Test by 10 wickets, but they’ve been handed a boost ahead of the T20Is, with the experienced Chloe Tryon declared fit for the three-match series.

Tryon has been out of action since April, but her return is set to add some much needed firepower to South Africa’s middle-order and batting unit, overall.

Speaking ahead of the series, the 30-year-old called for consistency from her side, who she believes have done well in patches but have failed to play good cricket for long periods.

"We have played a lot of good cricket in patches, but to narrow it down, we have to be more consistent,” Tryon said, speaking ahead of the T20I series.

“We have to do well in all aspects of the game and ensure that we do the right things in the right stages.

"If we get those (decisions) right, it will give us a lot of confidence going into the World Cup."

The returning all-rounder asserted that the South Africa women will take confidence from the fight they showed towards the back end of the one-off Test in Chennai. There, South Africa trailed by 337 runs after the completion of their first innings, but showed immense fighting spirit in their second innings, amassing 373 runs to force India to bat again.

"It was really good to watch, especially the character they showed,” Tryon said of South Africa’s performance in the one-off Test.

“The Test match wasn't easy after Day 1. But, if you look at how they went into Day 3 and Day 4, it was fantastic to watch.

"Every batter was determined to try and take it as far as they could. Some of them hit some milestones, which will give them a lot of confidence heading into the T20Is."

Tryon, in her T20I career, has predominantly batted at No.6 and No.7. Since 2022, more than 85% of Tryon’s knocks have come at No.5 and below.

The 30-year-old said she’s had discussions with the management regarding batting higher in the order.

"We are still having those discussions (about my role), but I wish to bat as long as I'm out there and take the game deeper. In the last couple of months, I have learnt that the longer I can bat, the more time we have to put up a big score,” she said.

"Also with the ball, I am happy that I have been a lot more consistent recently.”

Four T20Is away from completing 100 games in the shortest format, the veteran hoped to guide the youngsters who are entering the side, hoping to make a mark.

"There are a lot of youngsters coming in. Hopefully, I can give them as much information I can so that they can learn as much as they can.”

The entirety of the T20I series will be played at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai from July 5 to July 9.
