Australia 5-0 India: Nathan Lyon predicts outcome of BGT 2024-25

The off-spinner also said that the assumption that Test cricket is dying doesn’t hold true

One of Australia’s four top-class bowlers, off-spinner Nathan Lyon predicted the outcome of the team’s upcoming Test series against India. India are the holders of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which will be played in Australia starting November 2024.

Lyon feels that Australia will not just be able to wrest back the trophy after a gap of 10 years but do that in style by clean-sweeping the visitors 5-0.

“My prediction is 5-0 to Australia,” Lyon answered a question by former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Brad Haddin on the Willow Talk podcast.

“It’s been 10 years since we have won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. I started thinking about this series when England were over in India, watching them go about it. I love the game, and I will watch a decent Test match, but I have had eyes on this series for a long time now," added the bowler with the second most wickets against India in Test history.

The New South Wales man has 121 Indian wickets in 27 Tests to his name.

Lyon, who has represented Australia in 129 Tests, doesn’t feel that the format is dying a slow death. To validate his point, the 36-year-old said, “This series is getting bigger and bigger, and when people say that Test cricket is dying, I disagree. When you walk on the street and talk to the local people, they are already saying, ‘India this summer, eh’. This series is in the back of people’s minds.”

The first match of India’s tour of Australia will be played at the Optus Stadium from November 22 onwards.
