Former Indian batter Ajay Jadeja has been named as the new heir to the throne of Jamnagar, which is the seat of the princely state of Nawanagar. The annointment took place on the special occasion of Dussehra on Saturday, October 12, and announced by the current maharaja of Jamnagar, Shatrusalyasinh Jadeja, who’s the cousin of Ajay Jadeja’s father.
Notably, Ajay Jadeja’s father, Daulatsinhji Jadeja, is also a three-time Member of Parliament (MP), in addition to being direct relative of the royal family of Jamnagar.
“The festival of Dussehra is believed to mark the day the Pandavas emerged victorious from exile. Today, on Dussehra, I am equally happy, as I have found a resolution to one of my dilemmas thanks to Ajay Jadeja, who has accepted to be my heir," Maharaja of Jamsaheb announced in a statement.
Jadeja was an active player in the Indian team during the late 90s and also held the position of vice-captain. However, his career came to a halt when he was named in a match-fixing scandal, which led to a ban.
Although the Delhi High Court lifted his ban in 2003, he never returned to play international cricket for India. Between 1992 and 2000, he played 196 ODIs and 14 Test matches for India. Since then, he has also acted in a Bollywood movie and moved on to a career in cricket coaching.
Recently, he was part of the Afghanistan team management during the 2023 ODI World Cup in India where the Afghans impressed with their performances against England and Pakistan.
