Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has extended head coach Jonathan Trott’s contract until 2025.
The ACB's press release confirmed the news and stated that the team’s stellar performance under Trott was the major factor behind the board's decision to extend his contract.
Notably, the Afghans have performed quite well under the Englishman across both white-ball formats. They had an ODI World Cup to remember in India in 2023, where they defeated England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. They ended up amongst the top eight teams in the tournament and directly qualified for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February 2025.
If not for the shock loss against Australia, where Glenn Maxwell scored an unforgettable double century, they were all set to feature in the top four of the tournament.
However, they achieved what they couldn’t do in the ODI World Cup in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the United States of America and the West Indies. They defeated New Zealand, Australia and Bangladesh to reach the tournament's semifinal for the first time in their history.
“The ACB wishes Mr. Jonathan Trott the best of luck in his next year’s stint with Afghanistan as he strives to elevate Afghanistan cricket further on the global stage,” the press release by ACB said.
Trott’s next assignment will be against Zimbabwe, where Afghanistan will soon play three T20Is, three ODIs and two Test matches. He’ll remain with the squad during the ODIs but would miss the T20Is and Test due to personal commitments. Former Afghanistan pacer Hamid Hassan will be the head coach in his absence, and Nowroz Mangal will be his assistant coach.
The tour begins December 11 with the T20I series.
