Abdul Samad first J&K batter to hit 100 in both innings of a first-class match

The all-rounder achieved this feat during a Ranji Trophy game against Odisha in Cuttack

Abdul Samad became the first Jammu and Kashmir cricketer to register a century in each of the two innings in a first-class game after he smashed an unbeaten 108, which came at run-a-ball during his team’s second innings against Odisha in Cuttack on October 21 (Monday).

On Day 4 of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 Round 2 match between the two teams at the Barabati Stadium, the 22-year-old added to his hundred in the first innings even as his team lost quick wickets and were reeling at 144/4.

During his knock of 108, the all-rounder smashed six sixes to add to the nine he had hit in the first innings, on his way to 127 off just 117 balls. With a total of 15 sixes, he now sits in the third position among Indian batters with the most sixes during a first-class game.

Samad, who made his first-class debut in 2019 as a 19-year-old against Uttarakhand, has so far notched up 1475 runs in 25 matches at an average of 44.69 and a strike rate of almost 100. He also has seven wickets to his name.

A regular for Sunrisers Hyderabad, it would be interesting to see if the franchise retains him once again in the Indian Premier League (IPL) like they did in 2022.

Most sixes in a first-class match by Indians

26 – Tanmay Agarwal (Hyderabad v Arunachal Pradesh) – 2023-24

21 – Rishabh Pant (Delhi v Jharkhand) – 2016-17

15 – Abdul Samad (J&K v Odisha) – 2024-25*

15 – Yusuf Pathan (West Zone v South Zone) – 2009/10
