The Impact Player rule in the IPL 2024 may have changed the perception of batting in the format - but even without it, runs are not going anywhere.
It was on show once again in Indian domestic cricket as riding on an unbeaten ton from Bhanu Pania and quick-fire half-centuries from Abhimanyu Singh, Shivalik Sharma, and Vishnu Solanki - Baroda scored 349/5 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali encounter against Sikkim - the highest-ever in T20 history.
The record for the highest total in the format was held by Zimbabwe, who scored 344/4 against Gambia during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Sub Regional Africa Qualifier Group B match in October 2024. Baroda’s 349 is only the third time 300 runs have been scored in T20s.
Despite not having the services of Hardik Pandya, the Krunal Pandya-led Baroda charged from the beginning to throw Sikkim bowlers away. The opening duo of Sashwat Rawat and Abhimanyu Singh Rajput scored 92 runs in five overs before Bhanu Pania decided to go all guns blazing to score 134 runs off just 51 deliveries.
Later, both Shivalik Sharma and Vishnu Solanki were on the money too, scoring 55 off 17 balls and 50 off 16 balls, respectively. Not a single Sikkim bowler conceded runs less than 10 runs per over.
This has been the craziest year of batting globally, with five out of six highest totals in the shortest format coming in 2024 itself.
