Who is Anshul Kamboj, Mumbai Indians’ latest pace recruit?

The 23-year-old from Haryana was named in the XI against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 6 (Monday) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

Born on December 6, 2000, Anshul Kamboj made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for Mumbai Indians (MI) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 6 (Monday)

The skiddy medium-pacer was bought for INR 20 lakh in the IPL 2024 auction.

Here are some facts about the Haryana bowler:

Early beginnings

Kamboj started playing competitive cricket at the age of 15 and was first seen in the Vijay Merchant Trophy 2015-16, an under-16 tournament for Haryana. However, in the following season, he was the second leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 20 scalps at 23.65 in six matches. He then turned up for them in the Vinoo Mankad U-19 tournament and also the Cooch Behar Trophy, before making his senior debut for Haryana in 2022.

RCB net bowler

Before he was picked up by MI, he was the net bowler with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2023.

“Actually, it was my first experience of being a net bowler [with RCB]. I thought some team would pick me. It was a very good experience, I had a very good interaction with some international players, and they helped me to deal with different situations,” Kamboj had told CricketNext.

“I got a very good idea of training both during the season and during off-season, so I got to learn a lot from RCB camp. I learnt a lot from Kohli, his body language was great."

Crucial bowler for Haryana

In Haryana’s Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023-24 campaign, he picked up 17 wickets at 16 and did so at an economy rate of 3.58. In the semi-final against Tamil Nadu in Rajkot, he picked up his best figures of 4/30 to help his side defend 294 including the wicket of Baba Indrajith.

India Under-19

He has played a couple of Under-19 Tests for India – both coming against South Africa Under-19 at the Greenfield Stadium Thiruvananthapuram – in February 2019. He picked up seven wickets across the two games, including best figures of 3/20.
