Lightning Boult strikes Mumbai
Trent Boult vindicated Sanju Samson’s decision to bowl first with two wickets in the first over and three overall in the powerplay. All three batters - Rohit Sharma, Naman Dhir and Dewald Brevis - were out for a golden duck. 3/22 are Boult’s best figures for Rajasthan Royals in IPL.
Hardik, Tilak’s 50-run stand
From 20/4, Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma forged a 56-run stand. But just when MI were coming back in the game, Pandya was out to Yuzvendra Chahal trying to hit a six. Thereon, Mumbai Indians went through a free fall again, losing 49/5 in the remaining 63 balls.
Chahal does the rest
After mayhem from Boult and Nandre Burger (2/32), Yuzvendra Chahal did the rest. He choked MI batters in the middle overs conceding only 11 runs in his four overs while picking the wickets of Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma and Gerald Coetzee.
Parag’s third big contribution in a row
Riyan Parag scored his second fifty in a row and has now made vital contributions in all three games for RR with scores of 43 (29), 84* (45) and today 54* (39). He walked in to bat during a tricky period (RR were 42/2), weathered the storm and raced his team across the finish line with 27 balls to spare. With 181 runs in the season, he now has the Orange Cap, tied with Kohli for most runs in IPL 2024.
Madhwal shines amidst capitualtion
Akash Madhwal snapped three out of four wickets picked by Mumbai. He finished with 3/20 in his four overs. The right-arm pacer was a revelation for MI last year but didn’t feature in the first two games. On his comeback, he was the only silver lining of a forgettable night for Mumbai.
