Contrasting powerplays - LSG 27/2; SRH 107/0

SRH eventually chased down the 166-run target in just 9.4 overs

In a match where Lucknow Super Giants registered their lowest powerplay score, Sunrisers Hyderabad smashed 107 runs in the first six overs - the second-highest powerplay score in Indian Premier League history.

In Match 57 of the 2024 edition, Bhuvneshwar Kumar choked the opposition with the new ball in the first innings. The Indian seamer not only dismissed Quinton de Kock and Marcus Stoinis but also conceded just seven runs in his first three overs.

As a result, LSG could only score 27 runs in the first six overs, registering their lowest powerplay total of all time. KL Rahul hit Pat Cummins for a six in the second over, the only boundary scored in the powerplay.

The way LSG batted in the first half of their innings, they made the Uppal surface look like a heaven for the bowlers. But then came the second innings, with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma making a mockery of Lucknow’s total.

The two left-handers smoked every single LSG bowler all around the park and took SRH past the 100-run mark inside six overs, doing it for the second time this season. SRH clobbered 107 in the first six overs.

Only four times has a team managed to breach the 100-run mark in the powerplay and the Sunrisers have done it twice in this very edition. Against Delhi Capitals, they hammered 125 runs without losing a single wicket.

Krishnappa Gowtham’s first over went for only eight runs before Abhishek Sharma smacked Yash Thakur for four fours in the second over. Gowtham was then hit for 22 in the third, Ravi Bishnoi for 17 in the fourth, Naveen-ul-Haq for 23 in the fifth and Thakur for 20 in the sixth.

Hyderabad became the first team in IPL history to score 100+ runs in the powerplay on two different occasions. SRH eventually chased down the 166-run target in just 9.4 overs. That’s right, 167/0 in just 9.4 overs.
