5 moments that shaped up Mumbai Indians' victory over Punjab Kings

Missed the game from Mullanpur? Worry not. We have got you covered

Suryakumar Yadav’s accelerated anchoring

His 78 off 53 might read like a typical SKY innings, but guess what? It was only the second time that he batted for more than 50 deliveries in an innings. Wickets kept falling around him, but his 14-over stay at the crease ensured that Mumbai could reach 193.

Harshal Patel stops MI from a 200-plus total

He is known for slow deliveries, and he used them and targeted the block hole to great effect at the death for Punjab, picking up the wickets of Hardik Pandya, Tim David and Romario Shepherd - the designated finishers for MI. His 31/3 ensured MI didn’t run away with the scoring at the end.

Bumrah and Coetzee derail PBKS’s chase

Only thrice have MI picked four or more wickets in the first three overs. Today was one of them, as Gerald Coetzee and Jasprit Bumrah combined to reduce PBKS to 14/4 by the 13th delivery of their innings. Punjab’s win% at that stage dropped to 3, and all hope seemed lost.

Shashank and Ashutosh’s rousing comeback

Shashank Singh's 25-ball 41 and Ashutosh Sharma's scintillating 61 off 28 did the unthinkable, ensuring that Punjab needed only 28 runs off the last 24 balls. Before Coetzee's 17th over where Ashutosh was dismissed, PBKS’s win% had reached 77.

Coetzee says to Punjab, “Not today!”

The 18th over of the PBKS innings saw Coetzee first dismiss Ashutosh by trapping him in a leg side plan, and then just gave two runs in the remaining five balls, ensuring that PBKS needed 23 off the last two overs with just two wickets left. In the end, that was too much to do for Kagiso Rabada and Harpreet Brar.
