Matheesha Pathirana returns to Sri Lanka to recover from hamstring injury

It remains unclear whether the 21-year-old has been ruled out of the remainder of the season, or will rejoin the side later on

In what comes as a body blow to Chennai Super Kings’ playoff chances, fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has returned to Sri Lanka to recover from the hamstring injury he picked up during the clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Chepauk.

Pathirana bowled two overs against SRH and picked up the key wickets of Heinrich Klaasen and Aiden Markram, but then walked off the field mid-innings without completing his full quota of four overs.

Now, a week on, CSK have confirmed in an official press release that Pathirana has returned back home to Sri Lanka.

“Chennai Super Kings pacer Matheesha Pathirana is nursing a hamstring injury and will be returning to Sri Lanka for further recovery,” CSK said in a release.

It remains unclear whether the 21-year-old has been ruled out of the remainder of the season, or will rejoin the side later on.

Pathirana’ injury adds to the woes of CSK, who have already lost Deepak Chahar to injury and will be without Mustafizur Rahman for the remainder of IPL 2024 due to the left-armer having flown back home to Bangladesh.

Pathirana, however, is easily the biggest loss of all. He has been the Super Kings’ standout bowler of the season, having picked up 13 wickets in six games at an average of 13.00 and economy of 7.68.
